Used Aircraft Sales - How To Navigate Your Way To
Finding The Right Used Aircraft
One of the biggest problems with buying a used aircraft is that the whole sales process is unlike anything... It is very much an unregulated process in terms of buying. When you buy a car, you can drive to a dealer and see what they have in terms of their used selection.
But you can't really do that with an aircraft... Sure you can buy one from an aircraft dealer, but unless you are in a massive city, the is likely only going to be a few to choose from. So the used aircraft sales market is different.
But that is okay - if you do the right things, take your time and be patient - you should have no trouble getting a good used aircraft.
Here's 2 Things You Can Do To Increase Your Chances Of Getting The Best Used Aircraft Possible...
First - Consider Using A Broker To Do Your Work For You:
Like we have said - the used aircraft sales market is going to be different then if you were buying a new one. So if you are a first time buyer and or very new to the industry itself, you might want to focus your efforts on working with a broker who knows the market.
There are a lot of good independent brokers out there and many of them have been in the industry for decades and are aircraft owners themselves. But the biggest advantage you have in working with a broker is the fact that they likely know the used aircraft sales market better then you would.
That is very important because they are going to know how to best value the airplane that you are looking at buying. Just because a seller wants a certain price for his airplane does not mean it is going to be worth it! And a good broker who has a good working knowledge of the aircraft you are looking at should know what the best price should be.
So go out and interview a few brokers and find one you feel comfortable with who understands the aircraft model you are looking at buying.
Second - Don't Just Focus On The Local Aircraft Sales Market:
The easiest thing to do is go to the biggest airport around where the most small airplanes are and find one you like that is for sale and buy it! But the problem is if you do this, you might settle for the wrong airplane simply out of convenience.
Not only that - it is easy to simply overpay for the airplane because it is local. Just make sure you don't settle for only a locally listed airplane. If you find one that you like that is local - that is fine, but make sure you find some other ones in the country that you can compare it with to make sure you what you are getting is the best deal possible.
