Piper Saratoga - A Great Aircraft That Is Worth A Second Look...
If you are in the market to buy a six seater airplane, you have probably figured out by now that you have a lot of models to choose from. That is why I want to give you a more in-depth look at the Piper Saratoga and show you what you need to know about buying, flying and owning this airplane.
When most people think of a single engine 6 seater, they usually think about the Beechcraft Bonanza or the Cessna 210. But what a lot of people don't realize is --- the Saratoga is a great 6 seater & in some cases it is cheaper to buy then the other airplanes in it's class.
#1 - If You Can -- Get The Turbo Charged Version:
When you are looking at buying a Saratoga, you can get the normalized version and the turbo charged version. The reason that you are going to want to think about getting the turbo charged version is because of the fact that you are going to add on about 15 knots of cruise speed.
SIDE NOTE: With the normal version (non-turbo) you are going to be able to cruise at about 150 knots and with the turbo version you are going to cruise at about 165 knots when you are up at altitude.
Not only that, your ceiling goes from about 14,000 to 20,000 with the turbo version of the Saratoga. That is a big difference if you are looking to fly over the weather or over some mountains.
Also, you may be in a high altitude area of the country & on hot days, having that turbo charger is going to help you get off the runway and up to altitude A LOT faster.
#2 - The Club Seating Is A Great Option!
The great thing about the Saratoga is the fact that you are going to be able to have club seating in the back. That means you are going to have more room for your passengers and they can actually face each other.
If you plan on hauling stuff, the space in between the seats gives you a lot of room to pack stuff in the back. It is a great feature, very comfortable for your passengers in most cases and it will give you lots of hauling options.
And because of the seating setup, Piper makes it really easy for you to load a ton of cargo behind the seats as well.
Not only can you load your kids, friends & family members in the back --- you can load all the golf club bags you are going to need! (-:
#3 - It Is An Easy Airplane To Transition Out Of...
One of the great things about the Saratoga is that it is not much different then the Seneca. Some day you might want to upgrade to the Seneca so you can have a twin version of the Saratoga. If you do this, you are going to find that it will likely be a smooth transition once you get used to the second engine.
But even if you never want to "upsize" to a Seneca, you have to realize that transitioning into the Saratoga is pretty easy if you have experience with the smaller Piper's. You will notice that the dash (control panel) is pretty similar to the Cherokee's & other smaller Piper's.
