Piper Cherokee 300 - The Big Cherokee That Is Worth A Second Look...
If you are one of the thousands of people who like the Piper Cherokee brand of airplanes, you are going to want to think about the Cherokee 300. It is a great airplane that has 300 horsepower, six seats and a lot of power.
When most people think of the Cherokee, they think of the four seater 140 or something similar. Sure those are great Piper models, but you have to realize that if you are in the market for a six seater and don't want to pay a fortune for it - the 300 might just be the way to go!
SIDE NOTE: Some pilots claim they are even getting around 11 miles per gallon in fuel burn with the 300's! Now, you have to varify the fuel burn on any airplane you buy - but even if it is close to 11 gallons, that is pretty darn good for a big aircraft!
In this article I want to show you 2 things you need to know about this airplane before you buy it. I am going to talk specifically about the 300 simply because of the fact it is probably the best version of the six seater fixed gear Cherokee’s.
First - If You Are In The Market For One - Here's Why You Should Look At It Over The Lance...
The reason that you are going to want to six with the Cherokee Six is because of the fact that you are likely going to pay more for the Lance & you are not going to gain much in terms of speed.
Before I go on - you have to realize that the Lance is still a GREAT aircraft in its own right & there are situations where it makes sense to buy a Lance. But in my opinion, when you compare the two together, your best bet is the 300.
Sure the Lance has retractable gear and club seating, but if those things are not that important to you, save some money and get the 300! You’ll go just as fast - 150 knots compared to the Lance’s 155 knots & you’ll burn a lot less fuel as well.
Some people like the Lance over the 300 because it looks a bit nicer, has the club seating & has retractable gear. But when you compare the numbers on the two aircraft, you are going to find that you are not going to be much further ahead.
So if the raw numbers are more important to you then the club seating & the retractiable gear - you will love the Cherokee 300. I would say it is more of the "work horse" version between the two airplanes.
Second - You’ll Have Lots Of Useable Carrying Capacity With The 300!
The good thing about this airplane is the fact that you are going to have about 1,500 pounds of useable carrying capacity. That means you are going to be able to bring along some friends or family and still have room for enough fuel to make sure you don’t have stop and refuel every 15 minutes!
IMPORTANT - This is a great airplane and it is very simple compared to other high performance planes in its category. You are not going to have to worry about the extra maintenance costs associated with retractable landing gear and all the hassles it could bring you.
If you are patient and wait to get the right one for your situation, you have to realize that you will probably be able to find a late model 300 for a lot less then some of the other competing airplanes that are on the market.
