Piper Cherokee 235 - What You Need To Know About This Great Piper...
When it comes to getting a good 4 seater low wing airplane, Piper has done a great job with it’s “Cherokee” brand! They pretty much have a model for most situations... One of the higher end Cherokee’s is the 235. This is a 235 horsepower version of this brand which rolled out in 1963.
IMPORTANT:You have to make sure you pay attention to the different versions of the Cherokee 235. Piper made changes to this great little 4 seater throughout it's years of production and you are going to want to make sure you know which version you are looking at before you buy it!
A lot of pilots like the 235 because it is essentially a 140 Cherokee with more horsepower and some minor changes. It would be similar to loosly comparing the Cessna 172 with the Cessna 182. Both are 4 seaters, high wing airplanes and have a good following.
First - It Has Better Performance Spec's Then The Cherokee 140...
The Cherokee 140 is a great little airplane that goes pretty fast. It would compare to the Cessna 172 in most cases. But some pilots who still want a four seater also want more power and flying range.
The 140 will give you roughly 480 nm of range and the 235 will give you about 700 nm worth of range... These are both estimates as you have to factor in a lot of things like wind, true air speed, weight, exc. But that is a good round number to work with.
Not only that, the 235 is going to cruise quite a bit faster... It will cruise at about 130 to 135 knots compared to the 140 which cruises at about 115 knots. That might not seem like much of a difference, but it is about 15 to 20 percent more.
So when you factor in the higher cruise speeds & the longer range, you can see why it might be worth a good second look. The 140 is a great airplane and should give you many very happy days in the sky, but if you want to upsize - check out the 235...
Second - It Is Very Reasonably Priced...
The one thing that is great about the Cherokee's is that they are for the most part very reasonably priced. Depending on when you are looking, you should be able to pick up a Cherokee 235 for around $50,000.
SIDENOTE: You have to make sure you don't just buy the cheapest one because it is cheap. Sure you might get a good deal, but you want to make sure you make your #1 priority a low total time & low engine time. If you do this, you should get a good airplane that you can hopefully resell down the road and get some of your cash back out of it.
There are not a lot of airplanes over the 200 horsepower mark that you are going to get for under $50,000. Not only that, you could pay a lot more then that if you wanted. So make sure you really look at this Piper gem as it might be the Cherokee model that you are looking for.
