Grumman Tiger - Some Important Tips About The Tiger AA-5B & the AG-5B...
When it comes to getting a single engine airplane that is a four seater, you have a lot of options! There are the main brands and then there are some of the other brands of airplanes that are not quite as popular. The Grumman Tiger is one of those brands. It is not a mass market airplane, but it is very popular amongst the people who own one and has somewhat of a rock star following.
IMPORTANT: The Tiger has 2 versions - the AA-5B & the AG-5B. You have to make sure you know that both are a bit different. Don't make the mistake of buying the wrong one. Some pilots don't look beyond the brand name and then get the wrong version for their flying needs.
#1 - The Tiger Has Great Performance Spec's...
One of the problems that a lot of single engine 4 seaters have is the fact that they don't have very good performance specs... Meaning - they don't go very fast! That is the great thing about the Tiger - it goes fast and performs very well.
You'll find that your performance will vary depending on the model that you buy and the age of that model, but you should see a maximum speed of about 140 knots and a range of around 650 nm. Those are pretty good numbers for a 4 seater non-turbo airplane.
Your also going to have a bit over 1,000 lb's of useable carrying capacity with the Tiger (depending on which model you go with.) So that is pretty good as well. Unless the previous owner changed things up - the Tiger comes with a 180 horsepower engine. That is a great amount of horsepower for this airplane because it is not to much where you burn a ton of fuel for no reason & it is not under powered for it's size.
#2 - It Has Some Cool & Unique Features..
The cool thing about the Tiger is the fact that the cockpit roof slides back so you can climb in from the top. One of the problems with most low wing airplanes is the fact that you have to usually go in through the right door and fold yourself in half to get down into the cockpit.
But with the Tiger, your going to slide the cockpit roof back & then step right in, sit down and get ready to fly the airplane.
