Flight Design CTSW - A Potentially Great Option If Your Looking For
A Used Light Sport Aircraft.
If you know anything about the Flight Design line of SLSA airplanes, you probably know that they are very popular and very nice airplanes. But if you are not in the market for a brand new Flight Design airplane, you do have some used options. One of those options is the Flight Design CTSW.
IMPORTANT: The Flight Design CTSW is no longer made, but there are some on the used market. The newest version of the CT series of airplanes made by Flight Design is the CTLS. But if you are looking to not spend the money on a new CTLS, the STSW might just fit your budget.
Here's 2 Important Things You Need To Know Before Buying A
Used CTSW Flight Design Airplane...
First - They Are Priced Very Well On The Used Market!
If you are looking at getting yourself into a brand new CTLS, your going to spend roughly $139,800 USD(1). If your budget allows for that amount - then great! It is an awesome airplane and you should look at it.
But if your budget does not allow for that amount, then you should consider looking at the CTSW which is a "short wing" version and it is a few years old. That means, you can pick one up for less then you would pay for a new version of the CT series of airplanes.
Your probably going to be able to get a used CTSW for around $80,000 USD if you get a good one. You want to make sure you balance out the price verses the total time on the airplane. Sure you can get one for really cheap that has 1000 hours (TT) on it, but in the not to distance future you'll be forking out some cash for an engine rebuild.
The other thing about getting one that is a bit higher priced but has a very low total time is the fact that you can take care of the engine the way you want to verses getting someone else's disaster. If you buy a used one that has 200 hours TT on it, your still going to likely be able to take care of the engine and hopefully maximize it's life vs getting one that someone has ran to the max and was hard on for 1,000 flying hours.
Second - They Do Have A Great Engine...
The great thing about the CTSW is the fact that it has a very reliable and well known Rotax 912s which has 100hp. The great thing about this is that if you do buy a used CTSW and have to rebuild the engine on it, you should have no problem finding parts and or a mechanic to take care of you.
A LOT of Light Sport Aircrafts are coming out with this exact engine & Rotax is very good at building high performance engines for other types of things like personal watercraft's and snowmobiles. So assuming you take care of your engine, it should be good to you as well.
