Cessna 172 - Why This Classic Might Be Right For You

If you are looking to get a four seater aircraft then you are going to want to make sure you consider the Cessna 172. There are a lot of four seaters that you can buy, but you have to realize that very few of them can compare to the Cessna 172.

You probably already know this and that is why you are on this page & thinking about buying a 172. However, there are a few reasons why you should think about this aircraft that you may not have even thought about yet. And I want to help you understand some of these reasons better so you can make a better choice and really know if this is the aircraft for you.

3 Important Reasons Why The Cessna 172 Might Be Right For You

First - It Is By Far The Best High Wing Aircraft In It’s Class: (Here's Why)

The great thing about the 172 is the fact that you are going to have a lot of visibility when you are flying it. One of the problems that comparable low wing airplanes have is that you can’t really see below you when you look out the side window.

Not only that, when you are trying to land and you are newer to flying you are going to want to be able to look out and see your proximity to the runway! You can’t do that when you are trying to land a low wing.

Also - with a lot of the low wing aircraft in the same class as the Cessna 172, you are going to have to enter the cabin from the passenger’s side and cross over to the left hand seat. But when you fly in the 172 you can simply hop in the seat because you have a door on your side! What a novel idea...

This Might Not Be Important To You (Yet)

One of the things that a lot of pilots don't think about when it comes to buying a Cessna 172 is the fact that you can carry more usable weight then a lot of other 4 seater airplanes in it's class. This is very important because of the fact that if your dealing with hot summer weather, your going to have density altitude issues that you need to deal with.

That is a factor because you want to make sure you can carry as much weight and fuel possible. And by having the 172, your going to really be able to haul a lot of weight and fuel. Not only is this important with the density altitude issues, but no one wants to have to stop for fuel every hour either.

So if you can get more range out of your aircraft, then your going to save a lot of money in terms of wasted fuel landing and taking off at airports to get more fuel. Sounds stupid - but that is what happens.

You have to allocate fuel to divert your trip to land, fuel up, take off & get back on course again. When you factor all that in, it really adds up. So make sure you get an airplane that has a good range and a good carrying capacity.

Second - You Can Easily Upgrade In The Future

One of the biggest problems that most pilots have is the fact that when they get an airplane they eventually out grow it and have to buy something else. That is fine, but the problem is that they end up having to retrain themselves on a new airplane.

But if you are getting a Cessna 172 you are not going to have that problem! The reason is because the 172 is very similar to the 182 and has a lot of the same flight characteristics as the Cessna 210. That means you are not going to have deal with a massive learning curve if you ever decide to upgrade to a bigger aircraft.

If you jump around from manufacture to manufacture, you will find that you are going to have to spend a lot of time re-training on different airplanes. Not only that, you'll also have to fly quite a few hours to get comfortable with that new airplane.

But you should not have that issue (as much) if you get a 172 and then upgrade through the Cessna line. They seem to have a lot of the same flight characteristics & the biggest thing is landing a high wing aircraft in a cross-wind.

Think About This Issue

If you have mastered that on the 172, you should more easily be able to do it on a bigger Cessna. I know this from personal experience. I trained on a Piper Cherokee then started flying a Cessna 172 and found that it was very different and actually difficult to land as I was used to the low wing aircraft.

I found that I had to invest a lot more into my training and flying on the 172 because I was trained on a low wing aircraft. I eventually got good at landing the 172 in a cross wind, but it took a bit. So - if you are trained on a Cessna model, in my opinion you do have an advantage as you can go up through the Cessna line more easily.

All in all - if you are looking at getting your own airplane you are going to want to make sure you seriously consider the 172.
