But part of the problem is trying to figure out which is the right one for your situation. When your buying something as important as an airplane purchase is - you don't want to screw it up. You need to get it right the first time so you don't have to worry about having to resell it and pick up something else...
3 Tips Every Bush Pilot Should Know
Tip #1 - Don't Under Buy Your Bush Plane (This Is Important)
One of the biggest mistakes people make when they are buying a specialized aircraft like a bush plane is they will under buy it because they are not thinking about the future. You have to realize that if you plan on flying on floats and ski's your going to want to have a good amount of power in the airplane you are going to be flying.
Especially if you are doing high altitude flying and going in and out of mountain ranges. One of the worst things you can do is get an airplane that is under powered. Sure it will work for you, but you'll probably thinking that you wished you would have bought something bigger!
Think Through This Issue (You'll Be Glad You Did)
Not only that in a lot of cases, with more power comes more capacity for carrying things and people weight. Your not going to want to make a habit at flying your plane at gross weight all the time, especially if you are in rough situations. And one of the easiest ways to fix that is to get a bigger plane and leave some weight room so you don't have to fly the thing to the max.
Sure you might have to spend a bit more cash on the front end to get something a bit bigger, but if you can fund the purchase, you will likely be glad you got a bigger airplane. There are very few pilots who ever regret getting something with more room and power. This is especially the case with bush planes as you'll likely be working them.
Tip #2 - Buy One That Has Been Kept Simple (This Could Save A LOT Of Money)
One of the things that some pilots like to do is load up their airplanes with the latest and greatest avionics and digital equipment. Some people really like gadgets and therefore think their airplanes need every single new navigational piece of equipment that comes on the market.
If you have a lot of money to do that then that is fine. But if you are buying a bush plane, you are going to want to make sure you. get one that has been kept simple. Sure you need good navigational equipment and tools, but make sure that the plane you are looking at has not been taken overboard in that area.
The reason is, your going to have to pay a premium for all those non-essential gadgets & you have to keep them in good shape. So make sure you get one with the IFR tools you need and equipment to get you to where you need to go safely. But don't go overboard on toys - as it can get expensive.
Tip #3 - Think About The Up-Sizing Potential (Most Pilots Don't)
One of the most important things you are going to have to think through when you are buying a bush plane is what you are going to do with it when you want to upsize or get out of bush plane flying all together.
Most pilots don't think about these things when they are buying their airplane. They just think about getting it and then flying it. But there is a good chance that you will eventually outgrow the airplane you are going to buy and you will want to get one that is going to be able to do more for you.
And when that happens, your going to need to get out of the one you have and be able to get top dollar for it. So make sure you think about your "exit strategy" before you buy your next airplane. That way you won't buy some junker just cause it is cheap. You'll hopefully realize that buying a junker for cheap means you will likely not sell it down the road or you could lose a lot of money on it.
