Beechcraft Debonair - 2 Important Reasons Why This Airplane Might Be Right For You
The Beechcraft Debonair is one of the Beechcraft "classic's"! It was produced in the 1960's and is still a very popular airplane among loyal Beechcraft owners and pilots. In fact, it is not uncommon to find ones that are for sale by owners who have had them for 10 or more years. And when you are looking to buy an airplane, those are the kinds of things you want to look for!
But one of the depressing parts of the Beechcraft brand is the fact that they are not cheap! The flagship Bonanza is considered a luxury airplane & for good reason... But if you can't justify the Bonanza or don't need to have 6 seats, the Debonair might be a great alternative for you & be an easy way to get a Beechcraft.
IMPORTANT: You have to be careful when you are focused on getting a Debonair as there are a few different models to choose from. In this article were going to focus on the Debonair C33 as it is the most advanced of the models that you can choose from. Not only that, at the time of this writing - this model has the most available on the used market.
Surprising Reason #1 - These Performance Specs Make Sense (Here's Why)
The great thing about the Debonair is the fact that it does very well in the air! The Debonair C33 is going to cruise at around 160 knots, climb at close to 1,000 feet per minute & has a range of about 550 nm.
Those are not bad numbers for a 225 horsepower Beechcraft. You have to always remember that the Beechcrafts of this era were not designed to be race cars in the sky. They were designed to be an all around great airplane.
So when you compare it to a Mooney or something like that, your going to find that it will probably not go as fast. But if you look at all the spec's in regards to the Debonair your going to find that it is an all around great 4 seater that will give you good performance, get you where you want to go fast & your probably going to be comfortable in it.
Surprising Reason #2 - It Is Priced Very Well On The Used Market (This Is Really Interesting)
When you consider that a newer Bonanza is going to cost you many hundreds of thousands of dollars, the price of a good used Debonair is not that bad! In fact, you should be able to get a good used one for under $100,000...
But you have to make sure you realize that because these airplanes were manufactured in the 1960's, they are not brand new. Some times pilots can get worried about the time that is on the airframes and overlook them all together.
The great thing about the Beechcraft Debonair is that when you land & taxi over to your destination with this airplane - people will be looking at you! (-: It's a great airplane and very nice to look at!
SIDENOTE: Your going to want to look for one that has around 3,000 TT on the airframe. If you can get one with less then about 3,000 hours - your doing very good! There are some out there with over 5,000 hours of total time, but you should not have to settle with one of those. Be patient and a good one should come up with better hours on it.
One of the other "side" benefits to getting the Debonair is the fact that it is a Beechcraft and once you get good at flying it, upgrading to the Bonanza might not be that big of a jump. The flying characteristics will be similar and the cockpit setup will be similar as well.
Don't Underestimate This Important Thing
So, if down the road you get bored of your Debonair and you have some extra cash to spend - at that time you can think about "up-sizing" to a Bonanza. Don't underestimate how important it is to be flying a smaller model then one that you might want in the future.
It's a lot easier to someday transition from a Debonair to a bigger Beechcraft then it is to transititon from a Debonair to another type of manufacture. Not only that, but you should have more confidence in the newer & bigger plane due to your experience that you will have had on the smaller one. And in flying - healthy confidence is very important as you probably know.
So make sure you realize how important this is. Also, it might help your insurance as well as you will have a lot of time on a similar type of aircraft.
